Bài 5: Introducing forty to forty nine

Starry, what are you doing with these road signs?

Are you learning about them?

Stop, go so many different signs.

Oh, you don’t know what that number is on that sign!

It’s 4 and 0, 40 , f-o-r-t-y.

The number 40 comes after the number 39.

Come Starry, let me explain it to you with these beads.

Here are four sets of beads. Each set has 10 beads in it. Count them.

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 that 10 beads.

Counting in tens and units that 1 ten plus 1 ten plus 1 ten plus 1 ten equals 4 tens that is 40 beads Starry.

So, 4 tens is 10 – 20 – 30 – 40

Now suppose I add 1 single bead to it that 4 tens and 1 unit 41 f-o-r-t-y o-n-e

When we add 2 beads, it 4 tens and 2 units 42, f-o-r-t-y t-w-o

With 3 more beads we have 4 tens and 3 units 43, f-o-r-t-y t-h-r-e-e

Now Starry, 4 tens and 4 units is  44, f-o-r-t-y f-o-u-r

And when we add 5 beads it’s 4 tens and 5 units  45, f-o-r-t-y f-i-v-e

Now on adding 1-2-3-4-5-6 beads it’s 4 tens and 6 units  46 f-o-r-t-y s-i-x

When we add 7 beads it’s 4 tens and 7 units 47 f-o-r-t-y s-e-v-e-n

On adding 8 beads it’s 4 tens and 8 units 48 f-o-r-t-y e-i-g-h-t

And finally with 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 beads it’s 4 tens and 9 units  49 f-o-r-t-y n-i-n-e

Now Starry, counting forward from the smallest to the biggest number we have 40-41-42-43-44-45-46-47-48 and 49

Similarly counting backward from the biggest to the smallest number we have 49-48-47-46-45-44-43-42-41-40.

Starry, now that we have learnt to count from 40 to 49.

Here are some jumble up numbers Starry, we have to put them in the correct order.

Let’s begin with 4 and 0, 40.

Next is 41, then 42-43-44 now we have 45 then 46-47 and 48 and finally the number 49.
