Bài 12: Comparing two numbers up to three digit

Hey Starry, let’s some fun. Pick up any to card from this slot.

The card you have pick up sure the number 4 and 2.

Now tell me which is the smaller number and which is the bigger number?

The smaller number is 2 and the bigger number is 4. Good!

Pick up to more card and write the smaller and the bigger number.

Now you have pick up 40 and 12.

You’re the smaller number is 12 and the bigger number is 40.

Great! Now write the smaller number and the bigger number from 63 and 98.

63 is the smaller number and 98 is the bigger number.

That we quick! Now I sure you something interesting.

Using symbol to show ‘bigger’ and ‘smaller’ numbers. You can see this symbol.

This is call ‘ bigger than’ symbol, this symbol is call ‘ smaller than’ symbol.

We know that from 12 and 9, 12 is the bigger number, and 9 is the smaller number.

When we write, we read it as twelve is bigger than nine.

And when we write, we read it as nine is smaller than twelve.

Now let us compare some more numbers.

Starry, just remember when we have to design which number is bigger and which is smaller.

The number with more digits is the bigger number.

Let us compare 7 and 413. The number 7 is smaller than 413, it is written as.

Now let us compare 259 and 20. The number 259 is bigger than 20. So we write it as.

Comparing three digit number. That was easy Starry!

Now let us compare two three-digit number. Compare 502 and 461.

Look at these numbers. All of them have three digit each.

First, we look at the digit in the hundred place,

502 has 5 in the hundred place, 461 has 4 in the hundred place. 5 is bigger than 4.

So we say that 502 is bigger than 461, on the same numbers, we can also say that 4 is smaller than 5.

Hence, 416 is smaller than 502. Compare 623 and 64.

If you look at these number you will see that all have three digit,

so we look at the digit in the hundred place.

Hey, look! All the number have 6 in the hundred place.

Now we look at the digit in the tens place 623 has 2 in the tens place, and 641 has 4 in the tens place.

Um, now let us compare these 2 numbers, 2 is smaller than 4, so we can now say that 623 is smaller than 641.

We can also say that 4 is bigger than 2, so now 641 is bigger than 623.

Starry, now let us compare 275 and 278.

In these three digit number, let us look at the digit in the hundred place.

Look! This is the same the 2 number. So we now look at the digit in the tens place.

All the number have 7 in the tens place. Now what do we do, Starry?

Of course, we look at the digit in the unit place, in 275 the unit place is 5,

and 278 has 8 in the unit place, 5 is smaller than 8, 275 is smaller than 278.

We can also say that, 8 is bigger than 5, so 278 is bigger than 275.

So, you must remember that why comparing three digit numbers?

We first compare the digit in the hundred place.

If the digit in the hundred place are the same, we compare the digit in the tens place.

If the digit in the tens place are the same, we compare the digit in the unit place.
