Introducing 50 to 59

Starry, I’m sure you know what this number is!

You don’t, it’s the number 50.

Remember we learnt counting number from 40 to 49. The number 50 comes after the number 49.

5 and 0  50, f-i-f-t-y.

Let’s me explain with these beads Starry!

Each string has 10 beads.

So ten + ten + ten + ten + ten that’s 5 tens Starry, the number 50

Ah ha…. Now you understand.

Now suppose I add 1 more beads to these 5 sets of ten beads.

That 5 tens plus 1 units Starry, 5 tens 1, 51, f-i-f-t-y o-n-e

And on adding 2 beads we get 5 tens 2, 52, f-i-f-t-y t-w-o

Next, 5 sets of ten beads and 3 beads is 5 tens 3, 53, f-i-f-t-y t-h-r-e-e

Now Starry, let’s add 1 more bead. 5 sets of ten beads plus 1-2-3-4 beads that 5 tens 4, 54, f-i-f-t-y f-o-u-r

Easy, isn’t it?

Now 5 sets of ten beads plus 5 is 5 tens 5 units, 55, f-i-f-t-y f-i-v-e

And 5 tens and 6 beads is 5 tens 6, 56, f-i-f-t-y s-i-x

Let add 1 more bead Starry, 5 tens plus 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 beads that’s 5 tens 7, 57, f-i-f-t-y s-e-v-e-n

With 1 more bead it becomes 5 tens 8, 58 f-i-f-t-y e-i-g-h-t

And finally Starry, we have 5 tens and 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 and 9 beads, that’s 5 tens 9, 59, f-i-f-t-y n-i-n-e

Starry, in ascending order we can now count from 50 and 51-52-53-54-55-56-57-58 and 59.

And starting from the biggest number we count in the descending order at 59-58-57-56-55-54-53-52-51 and 50.

Now that we have learnt to count Starry. Let’s do an activity together!

Match the column, shall we begin!

52 that’s f-i-f-t-y t-w-o

59, that’s Starry, match it with 5 tens 9 units.

50 is five tens

53 that’s 5 tens 3

58 that’s f-i-f-t-y e-i-g-h-t

51 is five tens 1

57 match it with f-i-f-t-y s-e-v-e-n

Here is the number line Starry!

It’s start from 50 and go on to 59.

In this activity you have to look at the number line and fill in the missing numbers in the ascending or descending order.

The missing numbers are 50-52 and 54

That’s counting in the descending order Starry, so we have 57-56-55-54 and 53.

56 dash 54 dash 52 dash

Counting in the descending order again. The missing numbers are 55-53 and 51.

Now counting forward 52-53-54-55 and 56
